Company Finds Market For Fetching Sticks

(Host) Ask anyone to name one popular Vermont export and they'll probably answer maple syrup or cheese.

But there's a new addition to the list of Vermont-made products: sticks. That's right those little pieces of wood we throw to our dogs are being packaged and sold far and wide.

They're called Fetchstix and as VPR's Sarah Ashworth tells us, they're 100 percent pure Vermont stick.

(Ashworth) Every idea for a new product has a story behind it. In the case of Fetchstix the story involves three friends sitting around a sugar house in southern Vermont. While the sap boiled, they imbibed a potent concoction known locally as Mr. Phisters.

(Dibble) "Basically you take a ladle of the sap out of the boiling sap before it gets into syrup and you put it in a mug and you put a little Wild Turkey in there, and that kind of got the story going a little bit, and we just were fooling around, trying to get an idea for a dog toy actually, and this seemed like a good idea, and we thought, well, what about real sticks?"

(Ashworth) That's one of the would-be entrepreneurs, Landgrove artist Anna Dibble. The other two are Dorset businessmen Norman Levitz and Neil Reilly. Levitz says the three knew it might be a bit presumptuous to charge people for a product that, literally, grows on trees.

(Levitz) "At some point in the process the pet rock came to mind, and we knew we had a winning idea."

(Laughter)

(Ashworth) Levitz and Dibble are longtime Vermont residents, but Reilly is a relatively new transplant from New York City, and as he says, he was sitting "out in the sticks" when he realized something Vermonters might not: sticks are a rare commodity in some places.

(Reilly) "Being a city person, and having a dog, I thought it was an ingenious idea, because when you're in the city you don't have a toy, you don't have access to sticks, you have rocks, and what do dogs love, they love sticks to chase, to chew."

(Ashworth) Mock them if you like, but consider this: The three friends have sold thousands of bundles of Vermont sticks in more than 30 states and Canada, and they're actually making a profit.

Part of the reason for their early success is that they had a solid infrastructure already in place. Dibble's husband runs a post and beam construction company, and Levitz and Reilly are co-owners of Wagatha's, an organic dog biscuit business. But, even so, Reilly says it's not exactly easy to sell sticks.

(Reilly) "The amazing thing is, there's actually a fair amount of work involved, we go to trade shows and people say: ‘sticks, how can you be selling sticks? I have a backyard full of sticks.' But they have to be sourced, they have to be cut, they have to be brought back, sanded, sized, and put together, so it's a real business."

(Sound of walking in woods, sticks cracking)

(Ashworth) And the business begins by finding the perfect saplings...and to do that you have to be able to see the sticks for the trees.

(Dibble) "This one over here looks pretty good to me, not his would be fine, that's about the right width."

(Reilly) "Well, we're looking for the kind of wood first, it has to be maple, and then it has to be the right dimension, you know, it has to be free of surface imperfections like cracks, and things of that nature."

(Ashworth) Many of the saplings are collected on Dibble's own property, or that of her friends and neighbors. The three owners say they're mindful of harvesting the wood in a sustainable way. Workers at Dibble's husband's company do most of the gathering, and then on rainy days when they can't build, they'll head to Dibble's basement and cut the saplings. And, that's exactly what worker Danny Wetherald is doing.

(Wetherald) "You make two different sizes, there's an 11-inch, if we want to cut an 8-inch, we slide the saw over, then after they're cut, we come over here to the sander, we sand the edges smooth, like this, and into the bin they go."

(Ashworth) But the three friends say a perfectly sized and sanded stick is just half the battle. You still need to develop good throwing technique. And that's why they've developed an illustrated instruction manual, designed by Dibble. It even includes her home phone number for technical assistance. And as Dibble and Levitz demonstrate, with her dog Pepper, the instructions really do start from the beginning.

(Levitz) "Remove one stick from bundle, grip stick firmly in left or right hand, I've got the right, now instruct dog to wait, ask dog to sit, if dog won't sit bribe with a pig's ear, swing arm back as far as it will go, bend your elbow, propel arm forward with great force, let go of the stick and yell, fetch!"

(Ashworth) The price for those instructions and three sticks is about ten-dollars. Levitz says he knows some may scoff at the figure, but he says they're only taking into account the raw materials. Not the cost of the harvesting or all that sawing and sanding, not to mention transportation and distribution costs.

The three owners say they know most of their stick buyers won't be Vermonters, though as Dibble says, they're definitely selling the Vermont brand.

(Dibble) "This product, I think, is pretty essential Vermont. And that's one of the reasons we thought it would be a good idea, it would be hard to do this in another state, I think, New Jersey sticks just don't have the same cache."

(Ashworth) That Vermont cache may mean something to a dog's owners, but it's a safe bet that a dog doesn't really care...as long as it's got a stick to fetch.

There are many people to thank for the success of the Canine Cancer Caucus in DC this past September. Among them are: well, Hudson, Murphy, and Luke – of course! So today I'm reviewing Wagatha's Pet Treats. So many different treats to choose from, and let me tell you, Bella and her brother and sister ate them up & begged for more! Wagatha's is an organic pet treat, made with delicious ingredients located in Vermont. Their mission is to celebrate the bond between people & dogs which i think is great. Bella has tried many a biscuit, but i might have to say this one might be her favorite.

Wagatha's comes in many delicious flavors. Bella's favorite was the Senior Biscuit, which i found odd because shes only 1 year old! The senior biscuit addresses anxiety, joint movement and digestion, all very important things for a pup.

Bella's 2nd favorite was the Breakfast Biscuit which is made w/maple oatmeal, bananas and apples, all of Bella's favorite things. I saved these for her for the morning time. Their treats also come in other flavors, such as Wheat Free, the "super biscuit" which is high in minerals and vitamins, Cranberry & Cheddar and also Tuscan Tomato & Herb. There was not one kind Bella did not like.

My mom fed these treats to her pup, Suzy and she is now begging me to buy some! We actually decided on purchasing the above picture which is the variety pack. Cute tins of each type of biscuit for the low rate of 45$!!!! Bella is VERY excited about these!!!

This blog's going to the dogs!

This blog isn't just dedicated things that us humans might appreciate. Oh no. This blog is dedicated to things that all creatures might appreciate. This time I'd like to discuss a little something that I love for my precious dog. Let's talk about Wagatha's organic dog biscuits.

The first time I bought Wagatha's for my little Ariel, I honestly bought them because I liked the name and the cute container they came in. I also liked the flavors they offer (Cranberry Cheddar, Breakfast Biscuit, Tuscan Tomato & Herb, and Original). They also offer a "Senior" option and a "Super Dog" option. Once I opened the canister, however, I found a whole new reason to be happy with my purchase. Inside every canister is a "certificate" of sorts which is worth 5 points. Once you have collected 50 points (or 10 canisters), you send the "certificates" to Wagatha's. At that time you can choose to either receive a free canister of dog treats for your dog, or you can have Wagatha's donate the amount of money that would have gone into your free canister of treats to a charity which Wagatha's supports. I love this option because not only does your pet get to have delicious, organic, healthy treats, but you also have the opportunity to help out a charity in the process. Product review: Wagatha's organic dog treats

The dogs and I both loved Wagatha's organic dog treats. The biscuits are made in Vermont with organic, human-grade ingredients that you can recognize, pronounce and probably already have in your kitchen. So unlike many biscuits, they're actually soft and easy to break into smaller pieces.

They also smell really good. The Breakfast Biscuit and Tuscan Tomato & Herb smelled so good I was tempted to try one myself. Even Lady, who is the pickiest eater I have ever met, really liked the treats.

Wagatha's organic dog treats are also priced reasonably in comparison to other organic treats at $8.95 for a 9 ounce tin or $7,95 when you buy three or more. Or if you have multiple dogs in the house, like me, and go through a lot of treats, Wagatha's also offers bulk packages to save money.

Wagatha's Gourmet Organic Treats

Cranberry Cheddar with a hint of mint...Tuscan Tomato and Herb...Breakfast biscuits... They sound yummy don't they? Can you believe these are DOG treats! Gourmet organic treats to be exact from a company called Wagatha's.

Wagatha's biscuits are made from healthy ingredients. They are 100% USDA Certified Organic
100% Human Grade Ingredients, certified Kosher, Baked and they use Virgin Oil Oil from Italy and Spain. The biscuits are made from whole wheat flour, easily digestible grains, extra virgin olive oil, sunflower oil, brown flax seed, eggs, non-dairy milk, garlic, honey and sea salt. Basically YOU could eat these biscuits too, although I think they might be a wee bit hard and dry for us humans to enjoy.

It goes without saying that Wagatha's puts a lot of heart into their biscuits. They even have special biscuits to fulfill the needs of senior dogs and a "Super" biscuit that is jam packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

So how do they taste? Well I didn't actually taste them myself (although they sound so good I was tempted to nosh on one... hee hee). Our dogEspn is not always big on treats. He likes those "leather" type dog treats. He'll eat biscuits when he's in the mood. I'm NOT exaggerating when I say that my dog practically attacked me after he tried his first one. Not in a bad way, I just mean he was jumping all over me. He practically jumped in my lap! Now just the MENTION of the "cookie" (that's what we call it) excites him. Our Wagatha's biscuits are in small zip lock bags. All I need to do is shake one of the bags and he comes running. And he INHALES the biscuit too! WOW! I wonder if he even knows what he's eating.

The Wagatha's treats are the perfect size too. My dog is about 20 pounds. He's on the small/medium size range and these are PERFECT for him. These might be a wee bit small for large/huge dogs, but none the less, they are just as yummy. You might just have to give a larger dog 2-3 treats instead of one. Since these are HEALTHY dog treats you can feel at ease giving your dog more then one.

If you’ve ever read the ingredient listing on your dog’s traditional pet food or dog biscuits packaging, it was probably enough to instantly convert you to switching over to organic foods and treats. The disgusting additives and questionable “food” products make you wonder how our four-legged friends ever manage to get the food down. According to Jewish scripture, unnecessary cruelty to animals is strictly prohibited, and this premise yields the guidelines for kosher food, as defined by the Kashrut, or Jewish dietary laws (kosher slaughtering is designed to be as fast and painless as possible). Just like their owners, pets can keep kosher too.

Kosher food is not a style of cooking, but rather food that has met the definition, preparation and consumption rules presented in the Kashrut. Chinese food can be kosher if it is prepared in accordance with Jewish law.

While there is no direction provided by Jewish law that animals must keep kosher, their owners may want to extend to them the benefits of a kosher diet, which is prepared under the most sanitary of conditions and is believed to provide the body with a more easily digested regimen ofnutrition, specifically by separating dairy and meat. Pets can also enjoy the same standards of nutrition as their owners.

On a practical level, supplying the pet with kosher food for the Jewish holiday of Passover, when the rules are heightened to entirely exclude leavened bread, or anything made from the five major grains (wheat, rye, barley, oats and spelt), means that the cat or dog can be fed at home, with the family, without conflicting with the week-long prohibition.

Kosher households use only kosher food in their preparation and eat from any of the three acceptable categories of meat, dairy or pareve (neutral, neither meat nor dairy), as identified and defined by Jewish law, but without ever mixing meat and dairy. This strict division must be followed from the very beginning of the processing cycle, for example, meat cannot come from a factory that produces dairy, and vice versa. Also, this rule must be maintained through preparation, using an entirely separate set of cookware, dishes and utensils; and consumption, with appropriate order of and time between consumption.

The companies that now provide kosher kibble adhere to the strict separation of meat and dairy to qualify the food as kosher for animals. This does not make the pet food kosher for human consumption, and in a kosher household, the animal's dish would have to be washed in a bathroom or laundry room sink, separate from the kosher supplies in the kitchen, advises Rabbi Joseph Landa of the Chicago Rabbinical Council, and consultant to Evanger's Dog and Cat Food Company, which provides kosher pet food.

Striving to close that gap is Wagatha's Vermont-made organic dog treats. The dog treats produced by Wagatha's are USDA-certified organic, kosher, and made with 100% human grade ingredients, boasts co-founder and biscuit-baker Norman Levitz, who personally samples his product, and encourages customers to enjoy a nibble on their dog's nosh, "because we believe that your pet should eat as well as you do."

Levitz, a professionally-trained chef, and his partner Neil Reilly, established Wagatha's "to offer the best. The biggest thing is that because our standards are so high, our product is really of a high quality," Levitz explains, "and if you care about your pet's nutrition, this is a direction you should be leaning."

Why kosher? "We wanted to be 100% organic. I don't like grey areas. The motivation for the kosher aspect is we did not want any barriers for someone to have a reason not to bring the product into the household."

Additionally, a percentage of the company's profits are donated to charitable causes, so baking, selling and even buying these treats can be a mitzvah (an act of kindness or a good deed). Enjoy!

Snack Attack

The quest for snacks continues! This time I went into Got Pet Food on 14th St. in Santa Monica and came out with organic wheat-free cranberry/cheddar biscuits in a little tin from a Vermont-based company called Wagatha's. The biscuits contain salt, which I'm not crazy about, but since the salt is listed as the last ingredient, I decided to try them anyway.

Good move: look at how delicious they look, how crantastic! With little bits of spearmint! I was tempted to eat one myself. I don't love the wasteful packaging, but maybe a cardboard tube is better than a plastic bag? Someone needs to open a dog-treats co-op where you could buy all your organic biscuits in bulk.

Anyway, Arthur loved them, like he loves most treats. (And growling at your food apparently makes it taste better.)

When Eli and I saw a box of Wagathas Organic Dog Biscuits arrive, we were all ears (and one of us, all wagging tail). Wagathas, a Vermont-based company, was established in 2006, as the brainchild between two guys - a chef and a former Wall Streeter. Their product line features only human grade ingredients, is all organic, and certified kosher. They have quite a wide selection available, from Cranberry Cheddar Biscuits and Tomato Herb Biscuits to even senior biscuits for the elder pup in your life. So what did Eli think?

The GOOD: Featuring all organic and human grade ingredients, these are treats you can feel good about giving your pet. I love the name, Wagatha, and the adorable containers contain fun pet quotes, letters from Wagatha and more.

The MOM VERDICT

Cate says: I love a company like this. One that comes together from pure passion and friendship, without such a keen eye on selling what will deliver the biggest buck on the bottom line. It’s a company with a sense of humor and a solid product, which is a winning combination. Now obviously I didn’t taste these myself (as if!), but I can tell you what Eli thought. Granted, he doesn’t have the most discerning palate, but he definitely liked these. When I first held one out to him, he stopped and sniffed, so it must smell a bit different than his usual fare. Then he dug in. And came right back for more. I was wondering if the unusual flavors (Cranberry Cheddar with a hint of Mint) would deter him, but it didn’t slow him down in the least, and he’s made his way through a variety of flavors now. Two furry paws up from this camp!

Tempting Treats

Wagatha's Super Biscuits

WAGATHA'S Super Biscuits tasted so good that our squirrel-chasing, tree climbing product reviewer couldn’t believe that they were wheat and lactose free and made with 100% organic ingredients including blueberries, carrots, and cranberries.

Nor, being a Wheaten Terrier, did she have any idea what Neil Reilly of Wagatha’s meant when he said that ““Lively dogs need lots of vitamins and minerals to keep up with rigorous activities and Super Biscuits were carefully formulated to re-energize and revitalize.” All she knew was that these Kosher biscuits tasted better than any pig’s ear she could ever remember eating.

Manchester, Vermont - December 26, 2008

An industrial kitchen in Manchester is stocked with many of the ingredients any bakery would have, but this business is for the dogs.

Neil Reilly of Wagatha's Dog Treats explains, "People are using pets almost as surrogates for children."

Wagatha's produces organic dog biscuits. They're part of a large and growing pet food and gift market estimated at about $41 billion a year. Reilly says, "Of that, the organic section is the fastest-growing segment, so we're in the sweet spot, it's really nice."

Reilly was a Wall Street commodities trader who gave up the city life for a quiet Vermont venture. He renovated Burton Snowboards' former plant and partnered with a professional chef, Norman Levitz. Levitz says, "Most often, pet food is made from food not edible for human beings."

But because he had years and years of restaurant experience, Levitz designed recipes using ingredients from human food. Whole wheat flour and allspice are just some of them. He explains, "I just didn't feel right about producing something I wasn't proud of and wouldn't eat myself."

So he does eat his own dog treats, and offered me one. I have to admit, it wasn't bad at all. They taste like thick gourmet crackers. With flavors like Tuscan tomato & herb, cranberry cheddar, and maple oatmeal with bananas and apples, the biscuits sound like human food too.

Rabbis have even certified them Kosher for observant Jewish households. Levitz says, "We're one of the few in the industry doing that."

When some Chinese-made pet food was found to contain harmful chemicals, the safe, all-natural approach here paid off in a big way. Business, both direct and wholesale, has quadrupled since 2007. You can find Wagatha's in 48 states and countries as far away as the Middle East.

Neil Reilly beams, "It really matters in the business world when you say something's Made in Vermont."

Buoyed by the strength of the organics industry, Wagatha's expects continued growth for their Made in Vermont treats from buyers who pamper their pets, and wouldn't give them anything they wouldn't eat themselves.

Most organic products including these biscuits come at a premium price. Wagatha's treats are about $8 per container, and are sold at retailers around the state. I had the opportunity to both meet the owners of Wagatha's at NYC Pet Fashion Week and to interview them on my radio show "Conscious Animal Radio". I was very excited to learn I would be attending Pet Fashion Week 2008 as I never get to attend Human Fashion Week which happens every year. But why do they call it Pet Fashion Week when it is really just a weekend? Oh well, believe me when I say that they pack a lot into those two days.

Anyway, the whole thing starts off Friday evening with a big charity gala and fashion spectacular representing all the pet manufacturers. And everyone that’s anyone is there. When I read that Wagatha's, a Vermont-based maker of organic dog treats, is offering to donate four years worth of premium treats to the yet-to-be-adopted first pet, my first reaction was, why give something away free to people who certainly don't need anyone's charity? Aren't there shelters filled with needy dogs, who would love to sink their teeth into one of Wagatha's certified organic, certified kosher biscuits baked with human-grade ingredients and available in six chef-inspired flavors? As I read on, however, I learned that Wagatha's owners, Neil Reilly and Norman Levitz already had that covered. Last year, they donated over 2000 pounds of treats to canine-friendly causes such as shelters, rescues organizations and therapy dog programs. In addition, if the Obama family adopts a shelter or rescue dog, Wagatha's will take care of that group with a steady stream of treats. So, if Wagatha's grabs some publicity by pampering what will already be a pampered pet, who am I to judge? Besides, do I really think that the President pays for his pet supplies with his own personal money? No, we, the taxpayers do. So, actually, Wagatha's is doing us all a service by picking up our dog treat tab for the next four years. Thanks guys!

Use these 9 tips to craft a pitch that will have retailers filling out purchase orders.

Neil Reilly, 46, a former commodities trader, used to walk the streets of Manhattan after the markets closed, trying to pitch his organic, kosher dog treats to retailers. Now Manchester Center, Vt.-based Wagatha's, co-owned by Reilly and Norman Levitz, 52, is projecting $1 million in sales for 2009. Reilly, like other entrepreneurs, learned that getting a product onto store shelves takes patience, persistence and a strong pitch.

Even connecting at first with a buyer for a larger retailer can take time and multiple phone calls. If cost allows, send your product to potential buyers before calling. When you do make contact, they will already have your product in hand.

Once you have a meeting set up, consider these nine tips for getting your product into stores and the hands of customers.

Address how your product compares to similar ones the retailer already carries. Adding a new vendor can be costly for a retailer. Buyers are taking a risk by agreeing to dedicate limited shelf space to a new product. Compel them to take a chance on your product by showing why it's better. Maybe your headphones have exceptional sound quality, a higher-than-average margin and come in five different colors.

Discuss how you and your product fit in with the retailer's culture. "The people behind the product and their mission are just as important as the product itself," says Harvinder Singh, a regional local products forager for Whole Foods. "We look for products that are made with high quality, organic ingredients, have a low carbon footprint and are socially just, meaning the growers and producers are paid fairly and treated well." Also consider the retailer's image: Is it high end or budget conscious? Trendy or traditional?

Demonstrate demand for your product. Retailers, especially large ones, often calculate revenue per square inch of shelf space. They want to know before they agree to carry your product that there's going to be demand for it. Tell them where else your product is carried or how many units you've sold through your website. Maybe a local boutique only bought 20 of your necklaces in an initial order but sold out of them in three days. Also, know your market. This includes the age, gender, income and interests of your target customer. Compare how your market overlaps with that of the retailer.

Show your passion. "If it's a quality product, you just have to tell your story," Reilly says. "You have to be really honest and believe in yourself." As part of his pitch to retailers, Reilly often will eat his dog biscuits, which are made in Wagatha's own facility.

Present a finished product, including packaging. Retailers want to know everything about your product. If you can't have your packaging ready for the pitch meeting, at least know what it's going to look like. Include a logo and artwork, and what materials you're going to use. Keep in mind that some retailers will be looking for recyclable packaging. Reilly says that some home stores and hotels he's pitched his dog treats to have been more interested in the packaging and what the product is going to look like on the shelves.

Address how your product will fare in difficult economic times. If your price point is comparable to or higher than your competition's, focus on why people still need or will want your product. Retailers, including Whole Foods, are focused on finding the next big trends, Singh says.

Discuss your ability to deliver. Buyers often are given a set amount of money to work with. If you tie up their funds and fail to deliver your product on time, you are wasting their shelf space and costing them money. Be honest with yourself and the retailer about how much of your product you can deliver and when. Failing to deliver on time also could result in hefty fines.

Be prepared to discuss your business plan. Major retailers in particular will want to know that you can continue to deliver your product as promised and that you will be professional to work with. "I love people with ideas and passion, but there's a whole other side to it," Singh says.

Don't exceed the allotted time, and leave enough time for questions. If buyers have important questions about the viability of your product and don't get to ask them, they might go with a surer thing.

Be strategic about the retailers you meet with. Major chains like Target, Best Buy and Costco may seem like a gold mine. But first realistically evaluate your ability to supply them with the amount of product they need. Consider starting smaller to gauge demand for your product. Also look for companies with programs supportive of startups. Whole Foods, for instance, has a Local Producer Loan Program for small, local producers.

Also consider hiring a manufacturer's representative or agent, someone to do most of the legwork for you and who doesn't get paid until your product gets placed.

"Go out and hit the street," Reilly says. "Just make sure you believe in your product."

A Conversation with Wagatha's Norman Levitz

I had the opportunity the other day to speak with Mr. Norman Levitz, one of the founders ofWagatha’s organic dog treats . We’re very pleased thatWagatha’s is one of 2Dogs’ sponsors.

Our conversation began when I asked him how he learned about 2Dogs2000miles and Hudson, Murphy, and Luke.

I came to know of Luke’s efforts from a mutual friend, Tracie Hotchner. Tracie actually lives a few miles from us down in Bennington (Vermont). She told me about Luke’s efforts and I thought it was just a fabulous idea. I just thought it was great. I’m totally supportive of what he’s doing. There needs to be more of this kind of a thing going on.

I noticed on your web page that an important part of your philosophy is to give back to the community. One of the things that Luke has told me is that for every shelter that he visits, you send them 10 pounds of Wagatha’s Treats.

That’s correct. … The products that we make are 100% organic, we manufacture everything right here in Vermont. Most of our ingredients are domestic and the ones that aren’t are either from Central America or Europe. Everything we do is human quality. We want our best friends to have the best.

You’re the developer of the biscuits yourself?

Yes, my wife and I started making these biscuits about 30 years ago when we were in college, so there’s quite a lot of history behind them.

Can you give us a little bit of the history? Why did you start making dog biscuits?

Well, here’s the thing. Like I said, about 30 years ago my wife and I started making these biscuits in college because we had a lot of friends and family who had dogs and … you know, on a college budget, there’s not a whole lot you can do at holiday time. So we decided to try making dog biscuits. The dogs loved them and it became an annual tradition for us. About 15 years ago we had a bakery in Rhode Island and we started making these biscuits at the bakery just as an aside. We sold a lot of them. I always wanted to do this as a business but the timing just was never right. Then I finally got together with my present business partner [Neil Reilly] who thought this was a fantastic idea and here we are, 2 years later.

So you got started in 2006?

2006, yes that’s right.

Right from the beginning we wanted to be 100% certified organic and we do not do anything that does not fit that profile. We’re also kosher. We didn’t want anyone to have any barriers to why they couldn’t bring Wagatha’s into their lives.

As a professional chef and as a culinary educator, you obviously understand the issues of good nutrition. Do you see a connection between nutrition and the higher incidence of cancer in animals?

Yes, I do. I see it in people too. You are what you eat and your body can only fight off and deal with so many chemicals and artificial ingredients and things of that nature before it begins to rebel. Even more of a reason for us to be completely organic … every ingredient in our treats is there for a reason. Most of the treats are very high inantioxidant properties to help fight cellular damage.

What drew you personally to the issue of nutrition in dogs in particular?

I think it was a number of things. One of the things is, as a culinary educator, nutrition was a big part of what I had to learn and teach to my students. So, to me that really made a lot of sense. And then, the more I researched commercially available pet products and pet foods, it was horrific what I found. I knew if I was going to get involved in this business that everything we did had to be nutritionally sound because I didn’t want to be part of the problem. I wanted to be part of the solution.

I understand that Hudson and Murphy especially like the Tuscan Tomato and Herb Biscuits. Do you know what your best selling product is?

The best seller is our Breakfast Biscuit. In the South we found that the Tuscan Tomato and Herb is the number one seller. In the North it seems to be that the Cranberry and the Breakfast go neck and neck, and on the West Coast is seems the Breakfast is number one. I think it just depends on people’s life style, eating habits … we haven’t found a dog who wasn’t partial to these biscuits!

In the years ahead, do you see your company expanding into dry food, because there’s certainly a need for that?

We are actually doing research into that – whether it’s going to be dry, wet, or raw or some combination of the three we’re not sure yet, but we’re really working hard to find the right direction to go; but no, we’re not going to be just a treat company. We are looking to extend our philosophy beyond the treats.

Do you see yourself moving into less of the canine boutique or on-line ordering and maybe getting out there to mainstream your product?

We’ve really built our business so far on supporting the independent retailer. Once you cross the bridge into the mass market there are a lot of problems that go with that and we really want to maintain the integrity of our brand. So, independent is where we’re staying. But our treats are all available on our web site, you can purchase on-line, and shipping is very reasonable – over $50.00 shipping is free. And we ship almost immediately – we usually ship that day or the next day FedEx ground.

Do you see your company, even as new as it is, leading the way to a new philosophy of thinking about feeding animals?

I think we understand the difference between right and wrong and understand what the health requirements are for animals and I think that we are just reflecting changes in the way people are starting to look at animal nutrition. We’re supporting that in everything we do. We try to get that message out to everyone we interact with -- that by feeding Wagatha’s they’re feeding their dogs the best available products that they can find. We put a lot of research and time into our biscuits and stand behind what we do.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about Wagatha’s and your interest in 2 Dogs?

I think that what 2 Dogs is doing is fantastic and I think raising awareness about canine cancer is really important. I think that grass-roots efforts will raise the awareness of people’s choices when they go into the store and buy what they buy. It seems that every month there’s another food recall, whether it’s pet or people … and why take that chance? For the majority of people, their pets are the center of their lives -- why subject your best friend, your family member to something you don’t have to subject them to? There are choices. And they’re not necessarily any more expensive.

With all the pet food recalls from China don't we need to be more careful what we feed our pets? Wagatha's makes this easier. The biscuits are made in Vermont and certified organic!

They come in six favors, Original, Tuscan Tomato, Breakfast Biscuit, Cranberry Cheddar, Senior, and Super.

My dog Patience got to try all the favors. She loved them! She got to know the bags they came in and got very excited. She didn't seem to have a favorite. She loved them all. I have to say they smelled great!

They only sell what they bake and they are 100% organic, certified kosher, made from human grade ingredients, and come in re-sealable containers.

The senior biscuits and super biscuits are wheat, corn and lactose free. So if you have a dog with allergies this could be great for them.

The Original has toasted whole wheat with garlic and honey. The Tuscan Tomato is wheat free, with spelt, barley, and oat flour, sundried tomatos, cheese, basil and oregano. Breakfast Biscuit is wheat free, with maple, oatmeal, bananas, and apples. The Cranberry Cheddar is also wheat free, with cranberry, cheddar cheese, and a hint of spearmint.

This company seems to be very devoted to it's customers and the health of dogs. They even donate 5% of profits to charitable causes.

I suppose I should be embarrassed to admit this, but Wagatha’s dog treats smell so good that I had the urge to eat them myself (especially the Organic Wheat Free Tuscan Tomato & Herb variety). I made my girlfriend sniff the tin. She first looked at me like I was crazy, but then she got it - these treats really do smell amazingly fresh and delicious. Like “real food” - that’s because they are “real food”. Reef and Lucian agreed with our sniff test. I took some of the cookies they often get (high quality stuff) and offered them a cookie in one hand and a “Wagatha” in the other - the Wagatha’s won out. I tried this with each flavor. (Though the Tuscan Tomato did seem to be a favorite, based on the drool factor alone!). The Wagatha’s won hands down.

Now down to the important stuff - Wagatha’s are made in Vermont, are 100% USDA Certified Organic, use 100% Human Grade Ingredients and are Kosher! Yes, Kosher. It’s very hard to find Kosher dog food/treats - just ask anyone who has looked. The company uses easier to digest grains such as whole spelt flour, oats, barley, and brown rice flour. They also include high quality, nutritious ingredients such as flax seed and Sunflower oil as well as eggs and honey. The biscuits are all gluten free as well.

Wagatha’s come in 8 oz. canister shaped tins that are pleasing to the eye. They’re not one of those treats you’ll want to put away in a jar.

I’m thrilled to have discovered Wagatha’s - They’re going to be a staple at our house in the future. They get my “extremely picky about what I feed my dogs” seal of approval!

Pet Fashion Week may be a bit of a misnomer for the two-day pet-lifestyle trade show that took place in New York City over the weekend, but don't tell that to the dogs who roamed the floors of the sprawling exhibition space dressed to maim, if not to kill, in rock 'n roll-themed hoodies, blinged-out collars, and hand-crocheted "pupooses."
